Self-ligating braces are an advanced orthodontic treatment category designed to support efficient tooth movement, greater comfort, and fewer office visits. Damon® braces are one well-known brand within this category, but they are not the only option. Dr. Joseph Giasi uses advanced self-ligating bracket systems selected for each patient’s unique smile. We’re not locked into a single brand, which allows us to choose the bracket system best suited to your treatment needs.
Braces at Wildflower Orthodontics
Self-ligating braces use the same basic components as traditional braces: brackets bonded to your teeth and an archwire that guides them into position. The key difference is how the wire attaches to the bracket.
With traditional braces, small elastic bands (called ligatures or o-ties) hold the archwire in place. These elastics create friction, collect plaque, and need to be replaced at every appointment. Self-ligating braces eliminate those elastics entirely. Instead, each bracket has a built-in clip or sliding door that holds the wire, letting it move more freely, with less friction, as your teeth shift into alignment.
The term “self-ligating” literally means “self-tying.” The bracket secures the wire on its own, without any extra ties or bands.
Damon braces
Damon braces are a specific brand of self-ligating braces made by Ormco Corporation, created by orthodontist Dwight Damon. Because of heavy marketing, many patients search for “Damon braces” when what they actually want is the technology behind them: self-ligating brackets.
Here’s the important part: Damon is a brand name, not a technology. Several manufacturers produce high-quality self-ligating brackets, including systems like Empower, In-Ovation, and Speed Braces. The core technology is the same across all of them: a built-in mechanism that holds the wire without elastic ties.
Dr. Giasi is not tied to any single bracket brand. He selects the self-ligating system that best fits each patient’s needs, so you get the benefits patients associate with Damon braces without being limited to one manufacturer’s product line.
